Breaking Barriers: Inclusion in First Responder Roles

In Allegheny County and the Pittsburgh area, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has partnered with workforce development organization Partner4Work to employ more people of color in the EMS field through a program launched in late 2020 called Freedom House 2.0. The program is named after the original Freedom House, an ambulance service established in 1967 and staffed mostly by Black Americans.

EDSI Allegheny EARN and Work Ready program participants have recently found success with Family Links, as two of them were  hired by the organization. As an employer, Family Links pays higher than minimum wage and offers their employees a full benefits package. They currently employ 350 individuals at their six locations in and around the Pittsburgh area.

Ariana is a 23-year-old, single mother with a 3-year-old son. She struggled with homelessness over the course of several years. She put a lot of work into finding stable housing for her and her son until they were eventually accepted into a transitional housing program, where she received help finding a permanent residence. In October of 2022 - before moving into her apartment - she began the Goodwill EARN Program. Her goal was to find full-time employment.
