‘EDUCATOR IN THE WORKPLACE’ – PPS teachers visit Allegheny General Hospital to learn latest industry trends

Pittsburgh Public Schools’ Director of the Career and Technical Education Division Angela Mike checked in with the New Pittsburgh Courier to discuss its “Educator in the Workplace” program, held Jan. 28. In conjunction with Allegheny General Hospital (and funded by a grant from Partner4Work), PPS educators visited the hospital to learn more about the broad range of career opportunities available to PPS students.

“The program included a tour of AGH facilities with stops at the Clinical Decision Unit, the Emergency Room, Life Flight and the GI/Endoscopy Lab,” Mike told the Courier. “The delegation also participated in a job shadowing activity during which they visited hospital departments that aligned with the subject matter that they teach. During this activity, teachers met with staff from the Facilities Department, Clinical Engineering, Marketing, Information Technology, Infection Control, AGH Day Care Center, Emergency Medicine, Dietary, and the Pathology Lab. Business Education teachers met with the AGH Chief Finance Officer, Don Jaffee.”

AGH representatives from Human Resources also provided information to the entire delegation about entry-level positions, job application requirements, internship and volunteer opportunities, and AGH career-ladder supports (e.g. on-the-job training, tuition remission, and career coaching).

It’s all about the teachers keeping up to date with the latest industry trends, as students determine which professions they may want to pursue. Mike said it also strengthens the school-to-career pipeline.
